‘가와이이(カワイイ)’의 미학과 표상의 정치

The Aesthetics of Kawaii and Politics in the Representation of Japan

이 글은 현대일본 대중문화를 대표하는 개념이자 일본의 대외 이미지를 구성하는 미적 요소인 ‘가와이이’의 미학에 대한 정치적인 독해를 시도함으로써, 현대 일본의 국가적 상상력과 대중문화의 산물들이 지니는 역학관계를 해명한 것이다. ‘가와이이’의 미학은 단순히 대중 소비사회의 문화현상이 아니라 일본이라는 나라가 ‘자기’를 어떻게 그 외부에 드러낼 것인가라는 ‘표상의 정치’와 밀접하게 연결되어 있다. 또한 그처럼 표층에 노출된 ‘자기’ 동일성을 지닌 표상이란 내부의 이질적 구성물들을 비가시화함으로써 구성된다는 점에서 ‘동일성과 차이의 정치’라는 주제와도 연관된다. 즉 ‘가와이이’한 대상에 대한 일본인의 애호, ‘가와이이’한 대상 에 긍정성을 부여하는 일본사회의 도덕, 나아가서는 스스로를 ‘가와이이’한 대상으로서 표상 하는 일본의 전략은 네이션과 미학의 상관성이라는 차원에서 다뤄져야 한다. 따라서 이 글에서는 ‘가와이이’라는 말을 일본의 국가적 상상력을 매개하는 미적 이데올로기를 내포한 용어로 전유하여, “주체가 자신을 미적으로 표상함으로써 스스로를 무해하고 선한 존재로서 표면화하는 기술”이자 동시에 “내부의 타자들을 미적인 대상으로 고착화함으로써 주체에 동일화시키는 기술”을 지칭하는 것으로 쓰고자 한다. 이와 같은 시점을 통해 “무의도적, 무의지적, 나아가 무의식적이고 무목적적인 무해함”이라는, ‘정치적 무취성’을 미덕으로 삼는 ‘가와이이’의 미학이 국가미학으로 확립됨으로써 배태하게 되는 전체주의적인 성향을 비판적으로 검토한다.

This study aims to interrogate the dynamics between national imagination and public culture of contemporary Japan, with a political viewpoint on the aesthetics of Kawaii (可愛い; カワイイ) which represents contemporary japanese public culture and constitutes its external image. It is not only a cultural phenomenon of public consumers society, rather related closely with the politics of representation, the way that the nation japan tries to express itself. And also it is about the politics of identity and difference. Because the representation of its identity outside is constituted by invisiblize the difference inside. That is, kawaii as the positive object of japanese enthusiasm, moral, national identity, must be treated with the relation of nation and aesthetics. In this study, kawaii, as an ideologically appropriated word that inter-mediates japanese national imagination, refers the technique of identity subject that enables expression of itself good and unharmful, also objectification of internal others. On this point of view, this study will criticize that the aesthetics of kawaii, which pursues political indifference such as unintentional, unvoluntary, unconcious unharmfulness, conceives totalitarianism when it comes to national aesthetics.
