두 문화적 ‘타자’를 바라보는 하나의 시선?

One view of the two cultural ‘others’?

20세기 초 제국주의가 고도로 발전했던 시기에 독일 선교 베네딕트회 오틸리엔 연합회 총아빠스 노르베르트 베버(Norbert Weber, 1870-1956)는 선교회를 지도하면서 직접 선교지역을 여행할 기회를 가졌다. 본 연구는 그의 ‘동아프리카’와 ‘한국’ 인식을 비교하면서 그가 두 문화적 ‘타자’를 바라보며 보유했던 ‘하나의 시선’을 식민주의와 선교 그리고 문화적 활동을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 베버에게 독일 식민지 동아프리카의 비문명화된 ‘원시민족’ 흑인과 일본식민지 한국의 문명화된 ‘문화민족’ 한국인이 ‘기독교화’, ‘독일화’를 포함한 ‘유럽화’ 되어야 하는 ‘문화 활동’의 대상이라는 점에서는 차이가 없었다. 비유럽 비기독교지역이 ‘유럽화’, ‘기독교화’ 되어야하는 가장 중요한 이유는 바로 세상의 모든 민족에게 ‘기독교 복음’을 전하라는 예수의 ‘선교명령’ 때문이었다. 또한 오틸리엔 연합회의 설립과 선교활동의 시작 계기가 1880년대 독일제국의 ‘보호령’ 획득이었고, 독일 제국에서 ‘민족적으로 신뢰할 수 없는’ 독일인 취급을 받았던 독일 가톨릭교도들이 교회와 조국에 대한 이중의 충성심을 증명하고자 해외선교에 대한 열정이 강했었다는 점으로 볼 때, 독일민족주의와 제국주의라는 시대정신 역시 중요한 역할을 했음을 알 수 있다. 베버에게 선교활동의 목표는 ‘신과 조국’을 위한 것이었다. 오틸리엔 연합회가 선교방침으로 ‘타문화 존중’을 내세웠지만, 문명화 사명이 타문화가 자문화와 같아져야 한다는 의미를 내포하고 베버의 독일 조국을 위한 민족적 열정이 컸던 것으로 보아, ‘타문화 존중’ 태도가 과대평가 되어서는 안 될 것이다.

Archabbot Norbert Weber(1870-1956) of the Benedictine Congregation of St. Ottilien in Germany have had several chances to travel Eastafrica and Korea as mission areas in the beginning of the 20th century, in ‘the age of imperialism’. This study investigates whether he had one view of the two cultural ‘others’, Eastafrica and Korea, in relation to colonialism, mission and ‘Kulturarbeit’, while it compares his perceptions of the two. Weber regarded Eastafrica and Korea as the mission objects by the Benedictines without differences which had to be ‘Christianized’ and ‘Westernized’, although he considered the black Eastafrican as uncivilized ‘Naturvölker’ and the Korean as civilized ‘Kulturvolk’. He justified this mission with the command of Jesus Christ to evangelize all nations of the world and with a sense of cultural superiority of Europe to the non-european cultures. And he had been influenced strong by the German nationalism which had induced the beginning of the Mission Benedictine of St. Ottilien and inspired the German Catholics who had been mistrusted as unpatriotic Germans because of their loyalty to the Pope their national patriotism. For Weber the mission, ‘Kulturarbeit’ aboard, meant his devotion to ‘God and Fatherland’.
