시오노 나나미와 베르톨트 브레히트의 작품에 나타난 카이사르 상 비교연구

A comparative Study on Shiono Nanami’s Caesar and Brecht’s Caesar

본 논문은 일본의 인기 작가 시오노 나나미의 카이사르 상과 독일의 극작가 베르톨트 브레히트 Bertolt Brecht의 카이사르 상을 비교 검토하는 작업으로, 브레히트의 역사소설 『율리우스 카이사르씨의 사업 Die Geschäfte des Herrn Julius Caesar』과 시오노 나나미의 『로마인 이야기』4, 5권을 중심으로 연구한다. 자신의 관점을 거의 ‘감정이입’의 수준으로 전하는 시오노 나나미의 탁월한 작가적 역량에 힘입어 많은 독자들이 고대 로마에 대한 지식을 거의 ‘전적’으로 시오노 나나미의 저서들에서 얻고 있는 상황을 고려할 때 본 연구자는 시오노 나나미에 대한 비판적 검토 작업이 필요하다고 생각한다. 본 연구는 시오노와 브레히트의 작품에 나타난 카이사르 상을 카틸리나 역모사건과 카이사르의 스페인 총독직 수행을 중심으로 검토한다. 시오노는 이 사건들 속에서 카이사르의 개인적 능력 및 자질을 통해 역사를 이끌어나간 위대한 영웅 상에 대한 포석을 마련한다. 반면에 브레히트가 그린 카이사르 상은 영웅상과는 거리가 멀다. 카이사르는 역사를 만드는 위대한 인물이 아니라 시티의 도구 및 하수인이며, 그의 통치 업무는 시티의 지침에 따라, 즉 상업 자본의 팽창을 위해 한 것이다. 시오노 나나미의 역사서와 브레히트 작품에 나타난 카이사르 상을 비교 검토하는 이 연구는『로마인 이야기』를 통해 얻게 된 독서의 즐거움을 ‘더욱 생산적이고 능동적인 즐거움’으로 바꿀 수 있는 계기를 마련할 것이라 생각하며, 이를 통해 고대 로마 및 역사 전반에 관한 비판적 시각 및 열린 시각을 제공할 것이라 기대한다.

This is a comparative study on the image of Caesar in the works of Nanami Shiono and Bertolt Brecht. The purpose of this study is to review Shiono critically. Considering the fact that many Korean readers have gained the knowledge of ancient Rome almost entirely from the works of Nanami Shiono. In this conditions, I think a critical review on Shiono is necessary. This study focuses on the Catilina-Revolt and the Caesar s governorship in Spain. In these events, Shiono prepares a image for the great hero who has led history through Caesar s personal abilities. On the other hand, Brecht s Caesar-image is far from the hero. Brecht s Caesar is not a great person who makes history, but a tool of the City, which represents the knighthood in Ancient Rome.I hope that this study will provide critical and open perspectives on the Caesar-image and on the history as a whole.
