The purpose of this study is to investigate the current state of the history of the English language (HEL) in the Korean collegiate curriculum and to anticipate its prospects for the future. To achieve the goals, we collected and analyzed the data in two ways. Firstly, we collected relevant information through searching the homepage of 100 English-related departments in Korea. The result showed that 65 departments are offering HEL mostly as an elective course for juniors. Secondly, we conducted a survey to find out how HEL is being taught now and what attitude the professors in the English-related departments have toward HEL. Most of the 42 respondents surveyed considered HEL as an integral part of the collegiate curriculum and said HEL would survive. Nevertheless, the respondents chose the difficulty and the large amount of course materials to cover as the first obstructive factor against teaching HEL. Based on findings from the survey, we suggest that HEL can be taught in two ways depending on the situations of departments and/or the level of students: one with a focus on the internal history of English can be provided for juniors or seniors equipped with the knowledge of English linguistics; the other with a focus on varieties of World English or the differences between American and British Englishes can be provided for first-year students without the knowledge of English linguistics to understand the background of English.
