이 글은 아우구스투스 시대의 평화 정책이 당시의 다양한 매체를 통하여 어떻게 이루어지고 선전되고 있었던 가를 다루고 있다. 구체적으로는 먼저 베르길리우스의 제4 목가시와 아에네이스, 호라티우스의 백년제 찬가 등의 문헌 사료를 중심으로 모든 적이 사라진 다음에 이루어진 평화와 이 평화를 토대로 한 황금시대가 아우구스투스로 인해서 나타나고 영속되기를 희망하였음을 알 수 있었다. 이어서 평화의 제단, 프리마 포르 타, 아우구스투스 보석 장식함 등에 나타난 당시의 이미지 자료를 통해서 아우구스투스의 군사적 정복에 의하여 로마제국의 평화는 하늘과 땅, 바다에 걸쳐서 이루어졌으며, 이는 번영과 풍요로움과 맞닿아 있을 것처럼 표현되었음을 살펴보았다. 이 글의 마지막은 이러한 아우구스투스의 평화의 개념을 아우구스투스 시기에 태어났던 예수 그리스도가 이야기한 평화와 비교하여 살펴보았다. 아우구스투스 시대의 평화란 전쟁에서의 승리를 바탕으로 한 평화, 풍요로움과 번영을 바탕으로 한 황금시대, 즉 칼과 빵에 의존한 평화라면, 예수 그리스도가 이야기한 평화는 무력 이나 빵에 의존하지 않으면서, 진리를 위해서는 분쟁도 불사해야 하는 하나님 말씀 위에 바탕한 평화라고 할 수 있겠다.
This article deals with how the peace policy during the Augustus period was expressed through various media of that age. First, this paper analyzes how it was revealed in literary works such as Vergil s 4th Ecloga and Aeneis, and Horace s Carmen Saeculare. According to this, the Peace accomplished by Augustus was the result of military conquest, followed by a golden age of stability and prosperity on the literatures. Secondly, it focuses on the images of that time, such as the Peace Altar, the Prima Porta, and the Gemma Augustea, and it is concluded that the peace of the Roman Empire was made over heaven, earth, and sea also by the military conquest of Augustus, which result in prosperity and abundance. As such, we could see a similar propaganda on Augustus’ peace policy through literature and image data. Lastly, this paper examined the concept of Augustus peace compared to that of Jesus Christ, born during Augustus’ reign. If Augustus’ peace is based on victory in war, combined with prosperity and prosperity, i.e. a peace that depends on sword and bread, the peace of Jesus Christ is never dependent on force or bread, but based on the Word of God, and sometimes it contains not peace but division for truth.
