Jihad: Struggling in the Way of God

이슬람의 14세기에 걸친 역사 중에서 20세기와 21세기만큼 지하드가 빈번히 회자된 적도 없다. 무함마드로부터 현대의 이슬람주의자들에 이르기까지 종교적 동기로 폭력과 전쟁을 정당화하는 무슬림들의 배후 에는 지하드라는 개념이 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 흔히 “성전”(聖戰)으로 번역되는 이슬람의 용어 지하드가 의미하는 바에 대한 역사적 고찰과 꾸란의 구절들 그리고 이에 대한 해석들에 대한 연구를 통해 아랍어 단어 지하드는 의미론적으로 거룩한 전쟁, 혹은 전쟁 자체와는 아무 관련이 없음을 밝힌다. 이 단어의 의미는 “분투하다”(strive), “노력하다”(exert oneself), “엄청난 고통을 감내하다”(take extraordinary pains)는 어원에서 비롯되어 “신의 길에서 그리고 선지자 무함마드와 그의 동료였던 초기 무슬림들의 모범을 따라 최선을 다하라”는 이슬람 신앙의 근본이 되는 신앙적 내용을 담고 있는 것이다. 그러나 이슬람의 전개 과정에서 세속적 동기를 가진 후대 칼리프들의 영토 확장을 지지하는 궁정 어용 울라마들에 의해 지하드의 본래적인 영적인 의미가 군사적인 의미로만 해석되고 강조되었고, 이것이 18세기 이후 등장한 이슬람 부흥운동가들을 거쳐 오늘에 이어져 무슬림 무장단체 들에게 끊임없는 영감을 주고 있다. 따라서 지하드의 복합적 의미를 외면한 채 종교를 동기로 전쟁과 폭력을 정당화하고 의도적으로 왜곡하는 일부 무슬림들과 그를 빌미로 이슬람 종교 전체를 폄훼하려는 비무슬림 들의 태도 모두 경계하고 지양해야 할 것이다.

In the late twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the word jihad had gained remarkable currency due to terrorist attacks by the Global Jihadists’ Movement that followed the September 11 attacks. Yet, the semantic meaning of the Arabic term jihad has no relation to holy war or even war in general. It derives, rather, from the root j.h.d., the meaning of which is to strive, exert oneself, or take extraordinary pains. Jihad is the verbal noun of the third Arabic form of the root ‘jahada,’ which is defined as “exerting one’s utmost power, efforts, endeavors, or ability in contending with an object of disapprobation.” Thus, the word jihad cannot be semantically equated with holy war for its meaning is much broader. This includes many activities unrelated to warfare which have been developed in the course of the expansion of Islam. The importance of jihad is rooted in the Quran’s command to struggle (the literal meaning of the word jihad) in the path of God and in the example of the Prophet Muhammad and his early Companions. These are fundamentals of Muslim belief and practice. Jihad is a concept with multiple meanings, used and abused throughout Islamic history. Although jihad has always been an important part of the Islamic tradition, in recent years, some Muslims have maintained that it is a universal religious obligation for all true Muslims to join the Global Jihadists’ Movement to promote a global Islamic revolution which we, whether Muslims or not, must resist against together.
