Perceived Risk of Crime among One-person Households

  • 142

This article aims to examine the effects of individual-level and neighborhoods- level factors on perceived risks of crime among one-person households. Using the survey data of 5,076 respondents in 2017, we compared one-person households with other types of households as to the perceived risk of crime and related factors, and examined different age groups among one-person households. Considering the heterogeneity of one-person households, the study found that perceived risks of crimes in different age groups were affected by a variety of factors related to fear of crime. The multiple-regression models show that among young adult one-person households, gender, education, direct and indirect victimization, income level affect perceived risks of crimes, which are not found significant among middle-aged and older one-person households. Also, it was found that residence ownership was a significant factor of crime risk perception among the older groups of one-person households. This study empirically shows that one-person households have a higher level of crime risk perception than other types of households and that one-person households are composed of heterogeneous groups who exhibit diverse ways of interpreting signals in perceived risk of crime. These results leads to the conclusion that characteristics of each subcategories should be considered in examining perceived risk and fear of crime.
