An Exploration into the Depression Experiences of 50’s Middle-aged Men-Focus on Male Professionals

이번 연구는 중년남성 직장인의 우울감이라는 심리정서적 경험을 탐색한 질적연구이다. 연구의 목적은 우울 경험이 있는 중년의 직장남성 2명을 심층면접함으로써 그들이 우울감을 경험하게 되는 상황과 극복의 과정을 탐구해보려는 것이다. 이는 우울감을 경험하게 되는 구체적인 외부적 상황에 따른 심리정서적 반응을 탐색하여 중년남성의 심리적 이슈와 변화에 대해 좀 더 밀도있게 이해하고자 하는 데 목적이 있으며, 이같은 탐구는 중년남성의 사회적, 가정적, 그리고 진로이슈 등 다양한 분야에 대한 상담적 접근에 실질적인 도움이 되리라는 기대와 확신이 있다. 연구결과, 연구참여자 장성주(가명)는 아내와의 사별 경험 등을 원망과 깊은 슬픔, 미안함, 무력감으로 경험하면서 신앙의 힘, 교인과의 유대감을 통해 수용적 자세로 극복하고 있었다. 또다른 연구참여자 김창진(가명)은 생존에 대한 막막함 등을 외로움, 불안, 좌절, 후회로 경험하면서 해결중심적 사고나 몰두할 일을 찾는 식의 직면적 자세로 임하고 있었다. 이같은 개별적 사례에 대한 질적연구는 연구결과에 대한 일반화의 의미보다 연구참여자 자체의 개별화된 독특성에 대한 이해에 초점을 두고 있다.

This study is a qualitative study on the psychological and emotional experiences of middle-aged male workers. Th e purpose of this study is to explore the circumstances of experiencing depression and the process of overcoming it through interviews with two middle-aged men who had a depression. It is to explore the specifi c external circumstances that led them to depression and the emotional responses resulting from it, and to understand more deeply the psychological issues and changes of middle-aged men. It is expected and believed with confi dence that such exploration will be of practical help for consultative approach to middle-aged men in various fields, including social, family and career issues. According to the research, Jang Sung-ju (alias), the participant of the study, experienced the feelings of resentment, deep sorrow, sorriness and helplessness aft er the death of his wife and was overcoming these feeling with the power of faith and bonding with the members in the congregation. Kim Changjin, another study participant, experienced the feelings of loneliness, anxiety, frustration and regret, thinking that he had no clue on how to live on and dealt with these experiences with solution-oriented thinking or by looking for work to focus on. Th e qualitative research on these individual cases concentrates more on understanding uniqueness of individuals than generalizing the research results, based on the characteristics of participants.
