This study looked at the effects of makeup behavior on self-esteem and interpersonal relationships among junior high and high school girls. For this, students from Seoul, Gyeonggi and other regions were chosen. To analyze makeup behavior, conformity, trends & instrumentality, and subjectivity were adopted. For self-esteem, positive and negative self-esteem was used. In interpersonal relationships, sensitivity, warmth, self-assertion, interpersonal tension, self-expression, norms observance and yeokjisaji (‘stepping into other people’s shoes’) were examined. A total of 276 students were investigated, and the data were analyzed in sequence using SPSS 23.0. In terms of the influence of makeup behavior on self-esteem and interpersonal relationships, ‘conformity’ showed a significant effect on ‘negative self-esteem’ and ‘positive self-esteem’. In the effects of makeup behavior on interpersonal relationships, ‘sensitivity’ and ‘self-expression’ had a significant influence on ‘conformity’ and ‘subjectivity’, respectively. In addition, ‘warmth’, ‘self-assertion’ and ‘norms observance’ revealed a significant effect on ‘conformity’ while ‘interpersonal tension’ revealed a significant effect on ‘conformity’ and ‘trends & instrumentality’. In the effects on self-esteem on interpersonal relationships, ‘sensitivity’, ‘self-assertion’, ‘interpersonal tension’ and ‘self-expression’ had a significant effect on ‘positive self-esteem’ while ‘warmth’ revealed a significant influence on ‘positive self-esteem’ and ‘negative self-esteem’. Furthermore, norms observance and yeokjisaji had a significant effect on ‘negative self-esteem’.
