A Study on Hair Embroidery Art with Re-creation of Sin Saimdang s ChoChoongDo

  • 87

Modern art pursues creative and unique design through exchange and collaboration. In diverse fields such as traditional culture, painting, sculpture and architecture, it has been recognized as a new art genre with blurred boundaries. So far, hair art has mostly meant making a flower using hair or creating a work of art with powdered hair. In this study, Shin Saimdang’s chochungdo (plant-insect painting) was reproduced by applying traditional embroidery to conventional hairstyling techniques. This design is meaningful in that it has expressed plane art and created a practical handicraft work by using Korean traditional embroidery in hairstyling. Her paintings on 8 folds were represented for hairstyling. The painting (36㎝ in length, 48.5㎝ in width) was reduced by about 20% (29㎝ in width, 39㎝ in width) and embroidered using diverse techniques. In addition, Shin Saimdang’s cursive writing was added on the back. In other words, the front had an 8-fold screen while the back was designed with a cursive hand screen for practical use in daily lives. This study was approached with sincerity to broaden the sphere of new art, while the use of embroidery opened the possibility of a new art form, the ‘hair embroidery art’. These art pieces could be understood as a new art genre such as a cultural tourist product or craftwork. Therefore, it is necessary to approach hair embroidery art as a creative art genre in cosmetology and art into which further studies can be made.
