Instructor’s Pedagogical Content Knowledge and Student Expectations in Translation of Texts in Specialized Area

  • 106

The purpose of this study is to develop Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) instrument for instructors teaching translation of texts in specialized areas, with the aim to propose some qualifications for instructors in fulfilling students needs and expectations. Most educational institutions require that the instructors teaching translation meet only few criteria - i.e. instructors have to be professional translators who have working experiences. For this reason, some translation classes are administered in a way that do not fulfill students needs in learning. For this study, Pedagogical Content Knowledge instrument was developed to measure teachers knowledge in six areas: knowledge of content, representation, student evaluation, students and curriculum. PCK instrument in a form of questionnaire was administered to instructors and the responses were analyzed and compared to feedback from students who enrolled in translation classes. The responses of PCK instrument from thirteen instructors show that correlation exists between PCK and the number of years teaching while there remain to be some areas: knowledge of students and knowledge of students evaluation which remain constant even with years of experience.
