A Study on the Lumped Parameter Modeling of Pneumatic Pipes

The components of a pneumatic control system are connected through pipes, which are actually a distributed parameter system. Although the distributed parameter model produces an accurate representation of pneumatic pipes, its hyperbolic matrix functions are difficult to apply in practical cases. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a simplified mathematical model that describes the dynamic behavior of pneumatic pipes with acceptable accuracy. To this end, this paper presents a simplified lumped parameter model in which the lumping is divided by pipe length. A simulation program was developed using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The transient pressure variation in the closed-ended pipes was calculated and compared with one-, two-, three-, four-, and ten-lump parameter models. There results revealed that the proposed pneumatic control system model incorporating the simplified lumped parameter model represents the physical structure of a pneumatic pipe, without complicating its mathematical description and the simulation program.
