The purpose of this study is to reconceptualize ‘student agency’ considered as a key concept of future learning, especially focusing on the philosophy of Levinas. Recently, in the discourse of curriculum reform, the concept of student agency assumes the possession of a student’s self-concept and the ability to translate one’s needs and wants into acts of will, particularly in a responsible way. This puts emphasis on modern perspective of autonomous and active subjectivity. This paper criticizes such an interpretation of student agency. To explore an alternative subjectivity of student this study intends to find some implications from the thought of Levinas who pursues ethical subjectivity beyond autonomous subjectivity.
