Many girls around the world, especially in developing countries suffer from issues such as lack of education, health services and safe environment. They also fall victim to various types of violence against girls. With a change of international development framework from MDGs to SDGs in 2015, some of the structural issues largely untouched by MDGs have been addressed, especially in the areas of violence against women, child marriage and female genital mutilation. Against this background, the South Korean government has launched Better Life for Girls(BLG) in 2016, a new initiative of empowering girls in the developing countries with three focus areas: providing quality education, creating girl-friendly healthy environment and strengthening economic self-sufficiency. As a government think-tank under the Prime Minister’s Office of South Korea, the Korean Women’s Development Institute (KWDI) is dedicated to supporting BLG, fully utilizing its research expertise of thirty more years in the women and gender areas and cooperation experience with its development partners.
