Factors Affecting Communication Ability of Nursing Students with Clinical Practice

The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting communication ability of nursing students’ clinical practice stress, empathy and self-esteem. Methods : This study was conducted from June 1 to June 30, 2018 in 261 third and fourth graders of four universities in Gyeonggi-do. Technical statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, Stepwise multiple regression Respectively. Results : The results of the study showed that communication ability was 3.67(±0.46), empathy was 3.40(±0.35), clinical practice stress was 3.11(±0.59) and self-esteem was 3.09(±0.53) respectively. Clinical practice stress was positively correlated with empathy(r＝.15, p＝.013), self-esteem(r＝-.22, p＝.001) There was a significant negative correlation with com-munication ability(r＝-.20, p＝.001). Empathy was positively correlated with self-esteem(r＝.14, p＜.001) and communication ability(r＝.25, p＜.001). Self-esteem was positively correlated with communication ability(r＝.51, p＜.001). Multiple regression analysis showed that the regression fit F value was 33.22, which was statistically significant(p＜.001), and the explanatory power of the model was 29.7%. Self-esteem was the greatest predictor of communication ability. Conclusion : It is necessary to develop educational programs to reduce emotional stress and improve empathy and self-esteem in order to improve communication ability of nursing students.
