The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting communication ability of nursing students’ clinical practice stress, empathy and self-esteem. Methods : This study was conducted from June 1 to June 30, 2018 in 261 third and fourth graders of four universities in Gyeonggi-do. Technical statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, Stepwise multiple regression Respectively. Results : The results of the study showed that communication ability was 3.67(±0.46), empathy was 3.40(±0.35), clinical practice stress was 3.11(±0.59) and self-esteem was 3.09(±0.53) respectively. Clinical practice stress was positively correlated with empathy(r=.15, p=.013), self-esteem(r=-.22, p=.001) There was a significant negative correlation with com-munication ability(r=-.20, p=.001). Empathy was positively correlated with self-esteem(r=.14, p<.001) and communication ability(r=.25, p<.001). Self-esteem was positively correlated with communication ability(r=.51, p<.001). Multiple regression analysis showed that the regression fit F value was 33.22, which was statistically significant(p<.001), and the explanatory power of the model was 29.7%. Self-esteem was the greatest predictor of communication ability. Conclusion : It is necessary to develop educational programs to reduce emotional stress and improve empathy and self-esteem in order to improve communication ability of nursing students.
