침체와 도약의 기로에 서 있는 한국 보험업계는 사회적 책임과 윤리경영을 강조하는 지속가능경영에 힘써야 할 것이다. 지속가능성장이라고 하는 큰 vision을 구현하기 위하여 보험비즈니스는 경제적 수익성, 환경친화성, 사회적 책임성을 균형 있게 조화하여 장기적인 성장을 추구하여야 할 것인데 여기서 지속가능경영의 세부 전략 중 하나인 리스크관리의 중요성이 매우 크다. 오늘날 리스크관리는 그 중요성이 날로 더해 가고 있다. 정보 통신혁명 등 과학 기술의 발달, 금융시장의 변화, 재해사고의 빈발, 경영활동의 세계화 등 기업을 둘러 싼 리스크가 날이 갈수록 복잡 다양화 되어가고 있다. 급변하는 경영리스크 환경에 처하여 기업들에게는 체계적인 리스크관리가 절실하게 요구되는바 향후의 리스크관리는 과거와 같은 보험 위주의 리스크관리에서 벗어나 통합리스크관리(Integrated Risk Management)의 추세가 될 것으로 예상된다. 부보리스크, 재무리스크, 신용리스크, 비상리스크 등을 포괄적으로 통합 관리하는 노력이 필요한 것이다. 이제 기업에게 있어 리스크관리는 과거의 소극적이었던 손실 예방 및 손실 감소 차원의 기능에서 한 단계발전하여 중장기적인 이익 창출의 적극적인 기능으로서 인식되고 있다. 신 성장 동력을 모색하고 있는 한국 보험업계는 발전의 지향점을 지속가능 성장에 두고 리스크관리 역량을 공고히 하고 통합리스크관리 서비스 제공에 힘써야 하겠다.

The environments surrounding the insurance business have been volatile. The public s negative outlook on the insurance business has mainly emanated from AIG’s troubles during the global financial crisis, will not be easy to get over. The significance of risk management is getting higher in the turmoil of financial markets due to global financial crisis. Ever rising interests in risk management such as ERM(Enterprise Risk Management) and the risk based financial supervision system can be an invaluable opportunity for the insurance industry, whose main function is risk management basically, for its future market as well as its survival strategy. The Korean insurance business which is at the turning point of growth and setback has to strive for sustainable management emphasizing social responsibility and business ethics. To achieve the vision of sustainable growth the Korean insurance business needs to seek for longer term growth with balanced strategies of economic profitability, environmental soundness, social responsibility and the role of risk management may be the most significant.
