Why Successful Firms Fail in the Face of Exogenous Shocks: Dynamic Capability and Dominant Logic Perspectives

본 연구는 외생적 충격에 직면한 성공기업의 실패요인을 기업의 지속가능한 경쟁우위에 미치는 슘페테리안 효과에 대한 역동적 관점에서의 고찰을 통해 제시하는데 주된 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 위하여 먼저 환경의 안정기에 속해 있는 기업의 지속가능한 경쟁우위 달성을 위한 필수요소로서 경쟁전략, 조직구조, 기술 간의 조화를 강조하는 공변화 모델을 제시하였다. 더불어 이와 같은 공변화의 효과적인 운영을 통해 달성한 경쟁우위가 외생적 충격에 직면하게 되었을 때 어떻게 경쟁우위가 아닌 경쟁열위의 요인으로 변질될 수 있는지를 동태적 능력과 지배적 논리의 관점에서 설명하고 있다. 본 연구는 조직이론 관점에서의 슘페테리안 경쟁 논리를 포괄하는 전략경영 분야의 향후 연구의 중요성을 시사하고 있다.

The purpose of this research is to offer an exploration of why successful firms fail in the face of exogenous shocks by incorporating a temporal component and reviewing the impact of Schumpetrian shocks on sustainable competitive advantage. For this purpose, I first propose a covariation model that represents the importance of the fit among a firm’s competitive strategy, structure, and technology to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage during the periods of stability. Then I suggest the propositions revealing how this sustainable competitive advantage turns to a competitive disadvantage, and thus become a reason for the failure of successful firms in the face of exogenous shocks. The propositions are particularly amplified in the perspectives of dynamic capability and dominant logic, the two emerging theories in strategic management. The research suggests an effective integration of the strategic management research on firm-specific assets and capabilities with the organizational theory research on Schumpeterian competition as a future research area that should receive more attention from academics.
