18∼19세기 일본의 ‘마쓰시마’ 인식의 추이

The Trends of Perception of Matsushima in Japan in the 18th and 19th Centuries

일본에서 다케시마가 울릉도를 가리킨다는 사실은 16세기에 다케시마가, 17세기 초에 이소타케시마가 처음 출현한 이래 적어도 19세기 중반까지는 변함이 없었다. 독도를 가리키는 마쓰시마(松島)는 1667년에 처음 보였지만 이것이 독도를 가리킨다는 사실도 19세기 중반까지 변함이 없었다. 17세기 후반 ‘다케시마 일건’ 결과 막부가 도해금지령을 냈을 때와 18세기 초반 막부가 다시 다케시마에 관심을 보였을 때도 이런 인식은 마찬가지였다. 대부분의 문헌은 다케시마에서 마쓰시마간의 거리를 40리로 기술했다. 일부 문헌이 다르게 기술한 바가 있지만 이는 예외에 속하며, 문헌 자체가 신뢰할 만하지 못하다. 결론적으로 일본에서 19세기 중반까지 마쓰시마(독도)를 울릉도로 인식했던 사실은 없으며, 오키 소속으로 인식한 적은 더더욱 없었다. 그 후 메이지 시대를 전후해서 서양의 명칭을 병기한 지도가 일본에 역수입됨으로써 혼란을 겪게 되었고, 그 결과 ‘마쓰시마=울릉도’ 인식이 한편에서 생겨난 것이다. 이어 해군성의 조사는 세간에서 마쓰시마로 일컫던 섬이 울릉도를 가리키는 것으로 확정했다. 그러나 명칭의 확정이 곧바로 영유인식으로 연결되었음을 의미하지는 않는다. 일본에서 울릉도와 독도 인식의 추이를 보면, 울릉도는 ‘마쓰시마=독도=울릉도’ 인식으로 변전했지만, 독도는 ‘마쓰시마=울릉도’ 인식의 등장으로 인해 힌동안 단절을 겪은 뒤 전혀 다른 방향으로 진행되었다.

Since Takeshima first appeared in the 16th century and Isotokeshima first appeared in the early 17th century, the fact that Takeshima in Japan refers to Ulleungdo remained unchanged at least until the mid-19th century. Matsushima, which refers to Dokdo, was first seen in 1667, but the fact that it refers to Dokdo has remained unchanged until the mid-19th century. This was also true when the Shogunate imposed a bans on the Takeshima as a result of the Takeshima Ikken in the late 17th century, and when the Shogunate again expressed interest in Takeshima in the early 18th century. In particular, most of the literature describes the distance between Takeshima and Matsushima as 40 ri. Although some of the literature has been described differently, it is an exception and the literature is not credible. Therefore, in Japan until the middle of the 19th century, Matsushima(Dokdo) was not recognized as Ulleungdo, nor was it recognized as belonging to Oki Island. However, after the Meiji era, maps bearing the names of western names were imported backwards into Japan and suffered chaos, resulting in the recognition of “Matsushima = Ulleungdo” in Japan. Then the investigation of the Navy Department confirmed the island that people called Matsushima as Ulleungdo. However, this does not mean that the confirmation of the name is directly linked to the perception of Sovereignty. Japan s perception of Ulleungdo and Dokdo, the perception of Ulleungdo has changed with the perception of Matsushima = Dokdo = Ulleungdo , but the perception of Dokdo has gone in a completely different direction after the disconnection due to the perception of Matsushima = Ulleungdo .
