제국 일본의 선만(鮮滿) 공식 관광루트와 관광안내서

The Official Travel Routes and Guidebooks of Japanese Empire to Colonial Korea and Manchuria

  • 156

The aim of this article is to analyse the historical characteristics of the colonial tourism of the Japanese Empire. The focus of this research is the analyses of the tourist travel guidebooks, titled as “Travel Routes and Expenses Estimation” and published as a series by Japan Tourist Bureau in 192030s. These books were the official guidebooks of the Japanese colonial tourism. Especially we pay attention to the phasic changes of the tour routes around the area of colonial Korea and Manchuria, offered in those guidebooks. The Korea and Manchuria tour routes corresponded to the expansion of the Japanese colonial railway systems such as Chosen(Korea) Railway and South Manchurian Railway. And the Japanese colonial tourism was the staterun travel. The travel experience was limited by the spatial boundaries set up by the imperial state. The tourist routes were composed mainly of memorizing and symbolizing the victory and development of the empire. At least in the official routes designed by the state and presented in the official guidebooks, the destination or main point of the tour was the borderland of the expanding empire, which was changeable in accordance with the variable frontier of the empire. Thus, the analyses of the conjunctural changes of the travel routes in the official guidebooks published by the Japan Tourist Bureau confirm us that the colonial tourism program were mainly produced in order not to represent the specificities of the diverse colonial localities but to represent the integrating empire itself.
