On the conception of ‘Imna’

The subject on ‘Imna’ has been recognized as one of the crucial subjects in the history of the relation between Japan and Korea in ancient times. However, most of studies on ‘Imna’ have been focused on ‘Imna Japanese Pu’. Accordingly, many studies were excessively attached to ‘Imna Japanese Pu’, which was merely the special example, and they had the tendency to limit the ‘Imna’ as just the general term of ‘Kaya’ or the southern part of the Korean peninsula. For this reason, major subjects connected with ‘Imna’, such as ‘Imna Japanese Pu’, ‘Imna Kaya’, ‘Imna levy’, ‘Imna reconstruction’, ‘Imna restoration’, etc., have been neglected without close examination. These conceptions are clearly originated from the conception ‘Imna’. However, as the conception, which was the origin of the word, has not been examined properly, the close study on the above mentioned conceptions could not be developed deliberately up to now. That is the reason why I tried to look into minutely the conception of ‘Imna’ in this essay. Considering the examples of ‘Imna’, ‘Imna’ and ‘Japanese Pu’ was treated differently, and the members in ‘Imna’ also treated separately with ‘Japanese Pu’. In addition, the fact that ‘Imna’ was the organization, had independent structure and members, could be comparable to ‘Japanese Pu’ was confirmed through this study. The reason why the conception ‘Imna’ was entangled can be found in the conception ‘Imna’ itself. That was, in lots of studies, ‘Imna’ itself meant the federation of Kaya empire. However, there is a difference between terms of ‘Kaya’ of ‘Kara’, which were entangled similarly, and ‘Imna’. The terms ‘Kaya’ and ‘Kara’ never as the conception to mean the organization having managers in them. Accordingly. ‘Kaya’ and ‘Kara’ were used to mean the region, and ‘Imna’ was used to mean the political organization. Considering these facts, the reason why ‘Imna’ meant one political unit, region or political organization having members can be explained. When the conception ‘Imna’ can be understood in this way, the terms related with ‘Imna’ and events happened centering around ‘Imna’ may be studied from new viewpoints.
