Domain’s Monopoly Policy and Merchant Guilds in the Sendai Domain

This paper focus on the following three points. First, this paper deals with domain’s monopoly policy. Domain’s main objective in devising the policy was to increase domain’s income. In carrying out this policy the domain needed the help given by the merchants. Industries such as fanning, manufacturing, and commerce were influenced by the policy. Thus, scholars pay special attention to domain’s monopoly policy of monopoly in. their efforts to understand the political and economic development of the Edo period. Second, the domain government alone was not able to devise new policies to control the distribution of goods. It is essential for the domain to secure the fund provided by the merchants in carrying out its policies. Merchants also played a crucial role in restructuring the distribution system and exploring new markets for monopoly goods.
