고전소설 <전우치전>의 주인공 전우치는 작품 내에서 양면적인 성격을 보인다. 전우치는 어려운 사람들을 돕고 악을 징벌하며 등장한다. 하지만 임금을 희롱하고 여인을 훼절시키는 부정적인 면모도 함께 갖는다. 하나의 작품 내에서도 서로 다른 인식을 살펴볼 수 있는 것이다. 게다가 여러 문헌 전승에서도 전우치를 양가적인 형상으로 그리고 있어, 그에 대한 당대의 인식의 추이가 매우 다단하다는 것을알 수 있다. 여기에 더해 작품의 주인공이 부정한 행위로 인해 대결에서 패배하고 징벌을 받기까지 한다는 점 역시 특이한 설정이라 하겠다. 하지만 미디어서사로 전이되며 전우치는 패배자가 아닌 승리자로, 악인이 아닌 세상의 구원자로 다시금 변화한다. 여전히 그는 임금을 희롱하고 진중하지 못한 성격을 갖고 있음에도 결말의 승패는 정반대로 바뀌는 것이다. 도술로써 세상을 현혹시켰던 전우치가 그 도술로 세상을 구하는 새로운 영웅으로 탄생하게 된다. 이런 전우치에 대한 결말의 변화는 해당 서사를 소비하는 시장의 변화와 밀접하게 관계된다. 그렇기 때문에 사상이 불온한 도술가이자 패배자였던 전우치가 새로운 시대와 영화라는 환경에서 영웅으로 수용될 수 있게 된 것이다. 이와 같은 전우치에 대한 새로운 인식은 영화뿐만 아니라 드라마에서도 동일하게 나타난다. 즉, 지금은 전우치의 다면성이 매력으로 수용되는 환경이라는 것이 다. 이렇게 볼 때, 영웅을 규정하는 것은 인물의 행위보다는 당대 사람들의 인식이더 크게 작용되기도 한다는 것을 알 수 있다.
