There were vari ous types of foreign diploma cy relation such as subservienc e or friendship relation among ea st Asian countrie s in the premodern period. W hile Joseon and Japan had paral lel and equal frien dship based relation between Kin g of Joseon and gene ral of Ja pan s feudal gove rnment, Joseon had a subserv ience relation against Tsushima based on t ribute an d investiture. Japan house was the place to execut e such di plomatic negotiati on. Though Japan house(浦所倭館) b efore the Imji n War focused on the function of accommodation(客館), it became to have a character of commer cial house(商館) or fo reign diplomatic place in the po stwar period. There was no division between diplomat a nd trading in premodern perio d in Korea and Japa n, and va rious types of goo ds were exchanged through Cho ryang Japan house. T he types of trading are Jin sang(進上) and Hoisa(回賜) or Gucheong (求請) and Gumu (求貿), whi ch have character istics of both public trading and private trading. Gucheong was mainly by Japan to Joseon, but there were also m any cases that Jos eon reque sted to Japan. It m eans Gucheong was mutual exch ange. Gucheong good s are those us ed in the royal cou rt of Joseon, and Tsushima pro cured rapidly as they knew it was for Royal Use(御用). Japan hous e is a path of import and export. From the perspective of Joseon, J apan house had an important m eaning as a channel of importing goods. Although J oseon and Japa n tra ding via J apan house was main ly official, it also included p rivate trading for goods for roya l court or Daimyou(大名) or Garo(家老) i n Japan. In this sense, Choryan g Japan h ouse, together wi th Euiju(義州) and Gyeonghuen g(慶興) was one of th e routes open toward outside in Joseon that maintained secl usion policy.
