포사드니크호 사건과 對馬藩 의 移封運動

The Possadnick incident and Tsushima s movement of transfer its fief to Kyushu

  • 15

This thesis supplements the shortcomings of previous researches, especially the transfer movement s development, regarding the Possadnick incident by discovering new documents of Tsushima. With these new documents, I was able to investigate the following. First, during the conflict of Ohunakosiseto, although it was a warning shot, it was Tsushima s side who fired first, not the Russians. Tsushima s side was trying to conceal this fact to the end and alleged that the Russian s side fired first. Second, I was able to find out the truth about the transfer movement toward bakufu. The many transfer petitions bakufu received was written in place for the Lord of Tsushima by Edo s Tsushima Karou. Of those who wrote these petitions, the main writer was not Edo s Tsushima Karou, but was one of Tsushima Karou that was sent to Edo when the timing was appropriate. Because of these petitions, the transfer movement was perceived as Edo Karou s dogmatic doing, but it is clear that the transfer movement spread to all parts of Tsushima. Lastly, after the secret meeting between Senior Councilor Ando Nobumasa and British minister Rutherford Alcock to open Tsushima Port instead of Hyogo Port, the transfer movement nearly achieved it s goals. However, Hyogo s economic position was valued higher than Tsushima s geopolitical position by Vice-Admiral Hope, who inspected these places, therefore the transfer movement came to face its limit.
