The Sanctity and Queen - the Ascend of Sun-Duk and Kyou-Gyoku -

  • 31

This paper reviews the various problems including the circumstances of the ascend comparatively, focusing on Sun-Duk and Kyou-Gyoku who ascended in Shilla and Wakoku in mid-7th century. In the past, relay theory has been recognized as an important approach to understand the ascend of the queens, which explains queens as a intermediary because of the female shaman based on the spiritual superiority and impossibility of the male line succession. In other words, they were to be queens without their own volition despite the fact that they were not qualified as a queen in unavoidable situation. Such a research trend has been based on the patriarchal system which has been dominant from the formation of the ancient countries. Such a confucian view of womanhood has been strengthened through the centuries. The role and status of woman has been isolated as negative in history book written in the conventionality and the prejudice of a male-dominated society. However, the ascend of them have been realized through social consent that they are well qualified persons to meet the demands of times, to overcome the national crisis and to construct the new nation for stabilization of royal authority, in urgent time condition through reinterpretation of the historial materials and critical review of existing researches. Sun-Duk tried to achieve a social unification and to secure the autonomy of nation through the power of Buddhism represented as Shilla is a buddhist country . Whereas Kyou-Gyoku tried to secure the royal authority through the public works like the creation of city spaces such as the construction of Sumisan and Asuka. And also Kyou-Gyoku tried to stable royal authority internationally through the conquest of Emisy and the rescue of the BaikJe. They used the holiness of pedigree, mysterious insight and harmonized sanctity as instruments to achieve those goals. These characteristics of them are well expressed through the eulogistic posthumous title of queens like [SeongJoWhangGo] and [WhangJoMoJon].
