&#65378;新譯今古奇觀&#65379;은 백화(白華) 양건식(梁建植)이 1931년도 &#61440;매일신보(每日申報)&#61440;에 연재한 &#61440;今古奇觀&#61440;의 번역물이다. 연재 도중 번역의 방식을 바꿔 1~3화는 축역(縮譯)을 했고, 4화는 완역을 했다. 적극적인 의역(意譯)을 하며 원문의 문장에 많은 부연과 수사(修辭)를 가하고, 당대의 문체와 어휘를 활용했으며, 친근한 우리말식의 표현을 썼다. 그 결과 말의 재미와 맛이 있고, 우리말처럼 자연스럽게 읽히는 문장이 됐다. 내용면에서 작품의 의의는 첫째, ‘~ㅂ니다’ 종결어미의 경어를 구사해 문장을 구어체에 가깝게 만들었다는 점이다. 둘째, 2화 <이백(李白)>은 발해를 비하하는 원작의 내용을 그대로 반영해 발해에 대한 당시 학계의 인식과 대중의 인식 간의 차이를 보여준다. 셋째, 3화 <타박정랑(打薄情郞)>은 아내가 잘못한 남편을 하인들을 시켜 구타하는 내용의 원작을 한국에서 처음 번역한 것으로, 남녀 관계에 대한 당대 의식의 변화를 읽을 수 있게 한다. 넷째, 4화 <장한가(長恨歌)>는 같은 원작의 이전 번역본들과 달리 여주인공을 더욱 조신하고 정숙한 인물로 만드는 변개를 가하지 않아 이 시대에 와서 고소설의 서사관습이 상당히 약화되었음을 확인시켜 준다.

&#65378;新譯今古奇觀&#65379;is a translation by Yang Gun-Shik(梁建植) and serialized in &#61440;每日申報&#61440; in 1931. The first to third episodes are reduced translation, and the fourth episode is entire translation. He made liberal translation actively, applied many amplification and rhetoric to the sentence of the original text, used the contemporary style and vocabulary, and expressed friendly words of Korean. As a result, it becomes a sentence which has fun and taste of words, and is read naturally like Korean sentence. The significance of the work is that, firstly, it makes the sentence close to colloquialism by closing the sentence using a specific ending, ‘-ㅂ니다’. Secondly, the second episode, <李白>, reflects the contents of the original work, which despising Balhae(渤海), and shows the difference between academia and public perception of Balhae. Thirdly, the third episode, <打薄情郞)>, is the first translation of the original work in which a wife made the servants to beat the husband who committed a offense, so it shows the change of consciousness about the relationship between men and women. Fourthly, the fourth episode, <長恨歌>, unlike the previous translations of the same original, does not change the heroine to more virtuous character. It tells that the narrative convention of classic novel has been considerably weakened in this era.
