Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is the communication of trade-related information(such as price quotes and invoices) between business partners in structured, standardized electronic form, rather than in paper document form. Financial Electronic Data Interchange(FEDI) is a corporate banking service involving the electronic transfer of funds and remittance information linked to business transactions conducted via EDI. Processing FEDI transactions is more complex than processing EDI messages, because FEDI transaction pass from buyer to seller by way of the banks of the two companies involved in the transaction, and while FEDI message are transmitted either directly or over a value-added network between corporations and banks, they are transmitted over an interbank fund transfer network between banks. Even the Internet is emerging as a new data networking alternative to private networks and to value-added networks for companies. As electronic commerce gains its popularity from general public, FEDI will stand in the middle of effective electronic transactions. This paper explores the concepts and structure of FEDI and issues concerning FEDI implementation in Korea and the economic effects of FEDI. This study also suggests the government policy imperatives to assimilate FEDI into the current Korea financial and economic systems.
