Many countries in the world including Korea have experienced natural disasters due to climate changes, and the scale of disasters has expanded in urban areas owing to increased rate of urbanization. This research aims to examine the role of urban planning in disaster prevention, focusing on the case of landslide disaster. To achieve the goal, it examines and compares the law of the landslide disasters in Korea and Japan. We identified that, unlike Korea, Japan has detailed measures of landslide disaster prevention in urban planning system. Then we suggest following policy implications for Korea : making a law for landslide disaster prevention, making a comprehensive plan for andslide disaster prevention, making a linkage between such a law and plan, and amendment of the current law on urban planning.
