There have been suggesting new regional development strategies in the ear of localization in order to vitalize the industries of all locals and regions. Rapid international boom and bust cycle and economic restructuring have had deep impacts on regional and local economies. Regional and local authorities get paid important attentions to invigorate their industries. Region and local units have put top priority to maintain or enhance their economic vitality or competitiveness. They have examined their external economic environments and internal conditions for their selected and strategic industrial sectors. In this context, this paper examines the industrial structure of the northern Kyonnggi-Do and pays attention to the furniture sector which has been clustered in the region. The furniture sector has been losing its competitiveness due to fierce price competition, copy-cat practice, and small scale. This paper suggests some structural and institutional ideas to energize the furniture sector. Specifically, this paper asks the Kyonggi-Do regional government to introduce a so-called furniture industry support center to develop new designs and manage network among furniture firms. This paper also suggests to build a joint furniture brand for effective marketing for the furniture sector in the northern Kyonggi-Do.
