‘어사 제수’ 대목의 변이에 담긴 <춘향전> 필사층의 의식

이 논문은 <춘향전>의 ‘어사 제수’ 대목이 이본에 따라 변이된 양상을 토대로, 필사본에 나타난 변이의 주요 특징과 거기에 담긴 필사층의 의식에 대해 고찰한 것이다. 어사 제수 대목에서 이도령이 어사로 선발되는 시점과 방식의 변이는 <춘향전> 전승의 초기부터 비롯되고 있다. 그런데 필사본에서는 창본이나 판각본 계통의 이본과는 달리 이도령이 초계를 통해 어사에 낙점되도록 선발 방식을 변개시키기도 하였다. 이는 이도령이 지닌 어사로서의 자격을 부각시켜 어사 선발의 정당성을 보다 강화하고자 하는 필사층의 의식에 따른 것으로 보아진다. 이도령의 전라어사 선정은 창본이나 판각본 계통의 이본의 경우, 임금의 결정이나 이도령의 어사 자원에 의해 이루어진다. 그런데 필사본에서는 전라어사가 되고자 하는 이도령의 의지 표명에 의해 어사 파견지가 선정되는 것으로 변모되기도 한다. 이는 춘향과의 재회를 위해 이도령이 전라어사 선정 과정에서 보다 자발적이고 적극적으로 관여해 주길 바라는 필사층의 의식이 반영된 결과다. 창본과 판각본 계통의 이본에서 이도령이 담당할 어사의 소임은 임금의 특지나 이도령의 상주를 통해 제시된다. 이를 통하여 임금의 성군적 이미지가 부각되기도 하고, 이도령의 충성스런 어사 이미지가 드러나기도 한다. 그런데 필사본에서는 이도령의 상주 내용을 통해 그를 민중 구원자의 형상으로 그려내기도 한다. 이러한 민중 구원자의 형상은 <춘향전>의 필사층이 바라던 이상적인 암행어사상을 투영한 것이다. 어사 제수 대목은 창본이나 판각본 계통의 이본에서는 대체로 어사에 임명된 이도령이 하직 숙배하는 단락으로 마무리된다. 그러나 필사본에 서는 이 단락에 춘향과의 상봉을 기대하는 이도령의 감정 표출 부분이 덧붙여지기도 한다. 이러한 변이는 이도령이 인간미 넘치는 인물이길 바라는 <춘향전> 필사층의 의식이 만든 결과물이다.
