Death and Space of Kim Seung-ok’s Novels

1960년대 한국사회는 4․19혁명의 경험을 통해 근대적 주체로서 개인을 발견하게 된다. 이전과는 다른 감각과 형태를 모색하는 개인은 그들에게 주어진 개인의 자유와 가치에 의미에 대해서 회의적 시선에서 모색을 시도한다. 이러한 회의적 시선은 당대 한국문 학에 있어 새로움을 형성하는 주요한 기제가 된다. 이는 당대 한국문학에 있어 새로움의 발견으로 이어진다. 이전시기와는 달리 온전한 개별적 주체로서 개인의 발견은 문학에 있어 개별적 주체로서 인간에 대한 사유를 보다 폭넓은 것으로 만든다. 이러한 사유의 과정 에서 김승옥 소설의 의미는 발견된다. 김승옥은 스스로 자신의 문학에 대해 1960년대를 고려하지 않는다면 자신의 소설은 지독한 염세주의자의 고백일 것으로 규정한다. 이 지점에서 김승옥이 사유하는, 혹은 김승옥 소설이 형상화하는 개인의 의미는 보다 분명해진다. 김승옥의 회의적 시선이 머무르는 당대의 모습은 그의 문학적 공간에서 재현된 공간들을 통해 보다 구체적인 것이 된다. 언뜻 각각의 개별적 공간을 통해 구현하는 주체들의 모습들은 다소 상이해 보이기도 하지만, 이들의 모습은 결코 다르지 않다. 작가의 회의적 시선을 통해 반추되는 다양한 삶의 양태들은 결국 이전에는 사유되지 못한 근대적 주체로서 개인에 대한 모색이자 탐색의 과정으로 읽는 것이 그의 문학을 이해하는 보다 유요한 방식이 될 것이다. 그렇게 김승옥이 그려낸 개인은 끊임없이 자신을 탐색하고 분열하는 개인이다. 그 개인은 풍부한 자의식을 기반으로 자신의 존재를 끊임없이 진술한다. 이 파편화된 개인의 존재는 도시 공간을 통해서는 타자와 소통할 수 없는 현재에 머물러 있다. 결국 고독한 존재로서 개인은 여전히 자신을 회의 한다. 이렇게 회의하는 개인을 통해 1960년대는 보다 온전한 의미를 생성해 나가게 된다.

Korean society in the 1960s identified an individual as a modern subject going through 4․19 Revolution. The individual with a new sense and form unlike in the past kept doubting about the value and meaning of individual freedom. At that time novelty emerged in Korean literature. That was also the discovery of an individual. In a different way from earlier literature they could identify the reflection on the individual as a more complete subject. Kim Seung-ok is located in the center of the changes. Kim Seung-ok himself describes that if the 1960s were not been considered, his novels would be simply the confession of an awful pessimist. At that point, the meaning of an individual his novels try to symbolize is crystallized. The space where the author keeps doubting is signified in two different spaces of city and space. Such individual illustrated by Kim Seuog-ok is the one that seeks for oneself and divide constantly. The individual states his own sense of being continually based on his abundant self-consciousness. This fragmented being of an individual remains in the present that keeps him from communicating with others in the urban space. Eventually the individual as an solitary being still doubts about himself. The 1960s would obtain the whole meaning than before through such skeptical individual.
