Sexual Selection and Sexual Desire in Old Age - with a focus on Park Beom-shin’s Eungyo

본 연구는 박범신의 󰡔은교󰡕를 중심으로 노년의 주인공이 드러내는 생각, 행동, 심리의 궁극원인이 무엇이며, 이런 원인이 인간관계에 어떻게 작용하는가를 진화론적 관점에서 해명하는 데 목적을 둔다. 그 결과를 요약하면 아래와 같다. 첫째, 󰡔은교󰡕를 추동하는 힘은 스승과 제자 혹은 노인과 청년 사이의 권력투쟁이 아니라, 노시인 적요와 젊은 제자 지우가 은교라는 짝을 얻기 위한 성적 경쟁이다. 짝경쟁은 제로섬게임인 까닭에 살인이라는 치명적 결과에 이르며, 실현되지는 않지만 살인을 주도한 적요는 마키아벨리적 인물이라 할 수 있다. 둘째, 적요는 신체상과 자아상의 불일치에 자부심을 갖지만, 그런 불일치를 비정상, 변태로 간주하는 타인의 시선에 분노하고, 노화와 죽음은 자연법칙이라는 논리로 늙음의 의미에 대한 사회문화적 구성을 반박 한다. 그러나 적요가 욕망대상으로 삼은 17세 여고생은 높은 번식가치를 갖는다는 점에서, 젊은이들의 시기심이 부당한 것은 아니다. 셋째, 적요에게 섹스는 자연, 즉 절제된 욕망을 의미한다. 그런데 은교에 의해 유발된 강력하고 포악한 욕망은 과도하고 무절제한 성향을 띤다. 적요는 영웅적인 절제심으로 성적 욕망을 억제하며, 그 결과 그에게 은교는 영원한 처녀, 영원한 신부라는 관념으로 남는다. 이렇게 볼 때, 󰡔은교󰡕에서 은교는 일상성과 초월성, 관능성과 관념성이라는 양가적 이미지를 지니며, 이는 적요의 자기애를 함축하는 것이다.

This study considers Park Beom-shin’s Eungyo as an old age novel based on the relationship between the main character and others. The objective of this study is to clarify the ultimate cause of thought, behavior, and mentality of the aged character and its influences on the relationship from the evolutionary approach. First, what drives the characters to pursue Eungyo is not a power struggle between a master and his disciple nor between an old man and a young man. Instead, it is sexual competence in which an old poet – Jeokyo – and his disciple – Jiwoo – compete to attract a mate – Eungyo. As sexual rivalry is a zero-sum game, it leads to a fatal result, and Jeokyo who committed homicide can be considered as a Machiavellian character. Second, Jeokyo is proud of discordance between body image and self-image. However, he is furious with the other’s view in which it is considered as abnormality and pervert and he refutes the socio-cultural composition on the meaning of aging with the argument stating that senescence and death is the law of nature. However, a young man s envy can be justified as Jeokyo s object of desire - a 17-year-old girl - possesses high reproductive value. Third, for Jeokyo, sexual desire is a restrained desire. The strong and vicious desire caused by Eungyo reveals excess and dissolute aspects. Jeokyo represses the sexual desire with heroic self-control. As a result, Eungyo remained as an ideal representing an eternal virgin and an eternal bride. In this perspective, Eungyo shows an ambivalent image illustrating actuality and transcendence, and sensuality and ideality. This connotes Jeokyo’s narcissism.
