The effect of alloying on the mechanical properties of compacted vermicular graphite cast iron poured into a furan–bonded sand mold was investigated. The mechanical properties decreased with thickness and increased with the increase in residual magnesium content. The properties were also observed to decrease with increase in the amount of added sulfur. Although there was no big difference when a different nodularizer was used, the variation rate of nodularity with thickness was lowest for CievloyTM. The strength and hardness increased, whereas the elongation decreased with increased amount of added copper.
