This study investigated the effect of the use of kakaotalk in the cooperative learning of English reading comprehension. The study was conducted for two semesters at a university located in a southern part of Korea and involved two separate experiments. The first experiment consisted of two surveys with 99 participants, and the second, translation tests and a survey with 44 participants, who were divided into an experimental group and a control group. The findings show that: (1) the participants preferred kakaotalk over any other applications topped on their smartphones, (2) the use of kakaotalk in a cooperative learning about English translation had a positive effect on the increase of their English translation ability, and (3) they had positive attitudes toward sharing the processes and results of cooperative learning related to translation, and the positive attitudes were related to some of the characteristics of the smartphone and kakaotalk, such as easy accessibility, immediacy, cooperative learning through interactions, repeatability, and fun.
