Why Are There Differences among the Gospels? : An Analysis of Compositional Techniques of Ancient Biographers

본 논문은 복음서의 상이성을 새로운 관점에서 해석해 보려는 시도이다. 전통적으로 복음서의 상이성은 편집비평의 관점에서 설명되어 왔다. 다시 말해, 복음서의 상이성은 복음서 저자들의 상이한 신학 혹은 해당 청중/공동체의 서로 다른 삶의 자리에 기인한 것이라는 설명이다. 편집비평의 강점에도 불구하고 그것은 최근 다양한 도전들에 직면해 있다. 본 논문은 편집비평이 복음서 장르의 독특성을 충분히 고려하지 않았다는 점을 지적하며 논의를 시작한다. 그런 다음 복음서의 장르가 고대전기라고 주장했던 리처드 버릿지의 주요논점을 살펴본다. 버릿지의 관심이 복음서가 고대전기임을 증명하는데 집중되어 있었던 탓인지, 그는 자신의 주장이 함의하는 바를 두루살피지 못했다. 가령, ‘복음서 장르에 대한 연구결과가 복음서의 상이성에 대한 우리의 이해를 어떻게 증진시킬 수 있는가’와 같은 질문을 심도있게 다루지 못했다. 본 논문은 이러한 연구의 공백을 메우기 위한 시도로써, 고대전기 작가들의 8가지 작법의 관점에서 보면 복음서의 상이성의 많은 부분이 설명될 수 있음을 논증한다. 고전학 분야에서는 고대전기 작가들의 작법 사용으로 인해 동일한 에피소드의 평행본문 간에 상이성이 나타난다는 연구가 꽤 축적되었음에도 불구하고, 이러한 방법론을 (고대전기로서의) 복음서의 상이성을 이해하는 데 접목한 연구가 매우 부진한 실정이다. 본 논문은 8가지 작법, 즉 전가, 이동, 혼합, 축약, 스포트라이트, 단순화, 내러티브 디테일의 추가, 패러프레이즈가 다양한 고대전기 표본과 복음서에서 발견되며, 더 나아가 이러한 작법 사용으로 인해 평행본문 간의 상이성이 나타남을 증명한다.

This article aims to interpret the differences among the Gospels from a new perspective. Traditionally, the differences among the Gospels are explained by redaction criticism. In other words, redaction criticism finds the reasons for these differences in distinctive theologies of the evangelists or dissimilar concerns of hearers/ communities. Despite the explanatory power of redaction criticism, a variety of scholars have expressed complaints and concerns about its assumptions and methods. In line with this, this article begins the discussion by pointing out one limitation of redaction criticism- not giving due attention to the genre of the Gospels. Then the second section of this article revisits the main arguments of Richard Burridge who made the most convincing case for the Gospels as ancient biographies. Despite his high achievement, Burridge did not deal with the implications of his thesis that the genre of the Gospels is ancient biography. The third section explores one missing implication of Burridge’s research: how such identification of gospel genre as ancient biography can enhance our un- derstanding of the differences among the Gospels. A number of classicists have argued that there were compositional techniques that ancient biographers frequently employed and that the use of these techniques often resulted in the differences among the parallel accounts of a same episode. However, biblical scholars rarely applied these insights to the interpretation of the differences among the Gospels. This article maintains that these compositional techniques are found not only in various ancient biographies but also in the Gospels (as ancient biographies) and that the use of these techniques led to the differences among the parallel accounts in both ancient biographies and the Gospels.
