세월호 참사와 사회적 고통:

Social Suffering after the Sewol Ferry Sinking: On Representation, Experience and Intervention

본 논문에서는 그간 사회과학이 추구해 온 분과 학문적이고 실증주의적인 접근 방식에 대한 문제의식 속에서, 세월호 참사 이후 다양한 피해자들이 겪는 고통을 ‘사회적 고통’이라는 개념을 통해 보다 총체적으로 파악하고자 시도하였다. 연구자는 2014년 5월부터 안산을 중심으로 장기간의 현장연구를 진행하면서 피해자들의 다양한 활동과 일상에 참여하였으며 관찰과 심층면담을 수행하였다. 연구자가 발견한 바에 따르면, 세월호 참사에서의 고통의 문제는 미디어를 통해서 특정한 이미지로서의 고통이 주조되는 순간부터 사회적 성격을 지니고 있었으며, 참사의 고통은 다양한 사회 집단들이 처한 맥락과 조건에 따라 다른 형태의 고통과 삶의 문제로 경험되거나 집단 간의 갈등을 불러일으키기도 하였다. 또한 이러한 고통의 문제에 대한 국가와 전문가에 의한 개입은 피해자들의 입장을 충분히 고려하지 않는 방식으로 이루어짐에 따라 도리어 사회적 고통을 악화시키는 데 기여하기도 했다. 이러한 자료에 기초하여, 본 논문은 세월호 참사가 야기한 고통의 문제를 제대로 파악하고 해결하기 위 해서는 기존의 분과 학문적이고 실증주의적인 방법론을 넘어 한국 사회에 대한 보다 총체적이고 통찰력 있는 접근이 필요하다고 주장한다.

Critiquing the positivistic approach to human suffering in today’s social sciences, this paper attempts to understand the suffering of various victims of the Sewol disaster more comprehensively through the concept of social suffering. Since May 2014, the researcher has conducted long-term field work in Ansan City, while participating political and daily activities among different victims, particularly the bereaved parents. Research has found that the suffering of the Sewol disaster has a social character from the moment when suffering was cast in specific ways through the media. The suffering has also been differently experienced among different victims, occasionally causing conflicts, depending on the contexts and conditions in which the various social groups are situated. Furthermore, the state’s and experts’ intervention in the victims’ suffering has often contributed to its aggravation as it did not consider the victims positions sufficiently.
