A Study on Properties of the Working-Leser Engel Curve System

The Working - Leser Engel curve system is the relatively simple one among various Engel curve systems which satisfy the adding - up condition. This system has attracted a good deal of attention in emprical studies on household expenditure behavior. Furthermore, its popularity is assured since it may be derived from the almost ideal demand system, or AIDS for short, of Deaton and Muellbauer(1980). This paper analyses properties of total expenditure elasticities, curve shapes, and estimation method of the Working - Leser Engel curve system.
