This study examined the effects of Opuntia humifusa on serum lipids and antioxidant enzymes in ovariectomized rats. Thirty two female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups; Sham and ovariectomy groups, which were each divided randomly into two subgroups: one group fed a control diet and the other supplemented with O. humifusa powder diets (O. humifusa 50 g/kg diet) for 6 weeks. The serum total cholesterol level was significantly lower in the O. humifusa powder groups than the control groups in Sham groups. The serum LDL-cholesterol and liver total cholesterol and triglyceride were significantly lower in the O. humifusa powder groups than in the control groups in ovariectomy groups. The concentration of lipid peroxidation, MDA (malondialdehyde), and GSH-Px (glutathione peroxidase) and CAT (catalase) were not significantly different by O. humifusa. supplemented diets. In conclusion, O. humifusa supplemented diets may produce positive results on the serum total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and total cholesterol, and triglyceride in the liver.
