Ecological discourse of 21st century, rejects that to prefer this

북태평양에서 발견된 쓰레기 섬(GPGP)은 지구가 생존불능지역으로 변해가고 있음을 알리는 조명탄의 하나에 불과하다. GPGP는 소비주의의 산물로 플라스틱 쓰레기가 먹이사슬의 밑바닥부터 생태계의 생명력을 조직적으로 파괴한다는 사실을 말해준다. 이와 관련한 실천적 담론이 바로 ‘소비 중심적 삶에서 자발적 소박함으로의 전환’이다. 그렇다면 어떻게 전환할 것인가? 이 글에서는 『도덕경』의 ‘거피취차(去彼取此)’라는 사유의 틀로 해법을 모색한다. 자연적 욕망은 취하고, 인위적 욕망은 버리는 것이다. 노자가 ‘저것은 버리고 이것은 취하라’고 할 때, ‘저것[彼]’은 소비지향적인 ‘눈의 욕망’이고, ‘이것[此]’은 존재유지에 필요한 ‘배의 욕망’이다. ‘저것’은 소비주의 이념의 성립요건이며, 동시에 소비의 원동력으로 작동하며, 자연의 생존력을 약화시킴으로써 우리의 존재기반을 뒤흔들어 놓는다. 그래서 소유론적 욕망인 ‘저것’을 벗어나 존재론적 욕망인 ‘이것’으로 돌아서야 하는 것이다. 생태의식의 변화 없이 이 세계에서 생명가치가 실현되기는 어렵기 때문이다.

GPGP, a waste island found in the North Pacific is one of the signs that the Earth is turning into an inhabitable region. This result of consumerism entails that plastic waste systematically destroys the life of the ecosystem on the food chain from bottom to top. One of the practical discourses addressing this issue suggests a shift from consumption-oriented life to spontaneous simplicity as an intrinsic solution to the problem that we are facing in the 21st century. However, how would this discourse execute the switch? In response to the question, this article will closely look at the ‘Tao Te Ching’s framework called that “He rejects that to prefer this” as a solution; namely, natural desires are to be taken and artificial desires to be abandoned. Quoting Lao’s statement in ‘Tao Te Ching’ as to “Leave that one out and take this one”, we can interpret that one’ as consumption-oriented ‘desire of the eyes’, and ‘this one’ indicates ‘desire of the belly , which is crucial to existential maintenance for humankind. Not only is ‘that one’ a prerequisite for the consumerist ideology, but also serves it as a driving force for consumption and threat on our foundation for existence by weakening the nature s viability. Hence, we shall be required to move away from the possessive that one and return to the ontological desire of ‘this one’. It is due to difficulty of acknowledgment of the value of life in this world without changing the ecological consciousness.
