우리 시대 하느님 자비의 섭리: 성 요한 바오로 2세와 성녀 파우스티나

Divine Mercy’s Providence in Modern Times: St. John Paul Ⅱ and St. Faustina

20세기 말부터 최근까지 교회는 주목할 만한 ‘자비’의 행보를 걸어왔다. 1980년 교황 요한 바오로 2세(1920-2005)의 회칙 ‘자비로우신 하느님(Dives in Misericordia)’의 반포, 1993년 파우스티나 코발스카(1905-1938) 수녀의 시복, 2000년 파우스티나의 시성과 하느님의 자비 주일 제정, 2002년 폴란드 크라쿠프에서 있었던 자비의 대성전 봉헌, 2011년과 2014년 자비의 주일에 거행된 요한 바오로 2세의 시복과 시성, 2015년 자비의 대희년 선포, 이모두는 하나의 흐름을 형성하고 있고 그렇게 ‘자비’는 교회가 하느님을 알리는 첫 번째 표지가 되었다. 놀랍게도 이러한 역사적 맥락들은 모두 성녀 파우스티나와 성 요한 바오로 2세에게 연결되어 있고 또한 이 두 인물 역시 서로 깊은 연관성을 보여준다. 따라서 우리 시대 펼쳐진 하느님 자비의 섭리와 ‘자비의 영성’에 대해서 말할 때, 이 두 성인 성녀의 연결고리를 다루는 것은 핵심 요소라고 할 수 있겠다. 본 연구는 파우스티나 코발스카 수녀에게 전달된 자비의 메시지가 요한 바오로 2세의 체험을 통해 어떻게 교회의 주요한 사명과 가르침으로 성장 해가는지 그 과정을 조명하고자 한다. 이로써 ‘자비’라는 시대적 징표에 담긴 하느님의 계획과 호소를 식별할 수 있는 하나의 영적 해석의 틀이 제시될 것이다.

From the end of the 20th century to the recent, the church has remarkably followed the path of ‘mercy.’ The encyclical ‘Rich in Mercy (Dives in Misericordia)’ promulgated by Pope John Paul Ⅱ (1920-2005) in 1980, the Beatification of Sr. Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938) in 1993, the Canonization of Blessed Faustina and the establishment of the Divine Mercy Sunday in 2000, the dedication of the Shrine of Divine Mercy in Krakow, Poland in 2002, the Beatification and Canonization of John Paul Ⅱ celebrated on the Divine Mercy Sundays in 2011 and 2014, and the proclamation of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy in 2015. All of these makes one trend and the ‘mercy’ becomes the first sign of God in the church. These events are incredibly connected to St. Faustina and St. John Paul Ⅱ both of whom deeply affected each other. Therefore, when we talk about ‘the spirituality of mercy’ in terms of the divine mercy’s providence, the connection between these two saints is essential. The study researches how the message of mercy given to Sr. Faustina Kowalska had grown and become the primary mission and teaching in the church through the experiences of St. John Paul Ⅱ. In the study, we will be able to have a spiritual analysis to discern God’s plan and plea in the mercy as the sign of the time.
