True Man Walks a Double Path At The Same Time

장자철학은 쓸데가 없다. 장자의 생전에 혜자가 이미 제기한 이러한 비판은 정신세계로의 도피라는 형태로 오늘날에도 계속해서 반복되고 있다. 본 논문은 『장자』 「제물론」편의 조삼모사 이야기에 등장하는 양행(兩行) 개념을 분석함으로써 이 오래된 비판에 답한다. 양행은 장자가 제시하는 이상적 인간상의 행동방식으로, 인간이기에 부득이한 삶의 양태들을 기꺼이 인정하는 동시에 도를 향한 길을 추구한다는 뜻이다. 장자는 사람의 형태를 가지는 것에서 유래하는 한계들을 초월해야할 대상으로 여기지 않고, 진인이 소요할 수 있는 조건으로 삼았다. 장자는 결코 인간의 현실적 조건으로부터 등을 돌려 정신세계로 도피하지 않았다. 다만 도를 향해 걸으면서 현실적 조건으로부터 허위적 조건을 찾아 제거했을 뿐이다. 양행 개념은 장자가 현실 세계와 정신세계를 어떻게 연결시켰는지 보여준다. 진인은 양행함으로써 자신의 몸과 마음을 지키는 한편, 타인에게 스스로 변화할 수 있는 가능성을 열어준다.

Zhuangzi’s philosophy is no use. This is a critique, which had already been raised by Huizi during the life of Zhuangzi and is being repeated until today. In this point of view, Zhuangzi won’t handle the practical world but escapes to the spiritual world. This paper responds to this age-old critique by analyzing the concept of Walking a Double Path in ‘Discussion on Making All Things Equal’ in Zhuangzi. Walking a Double Path is a behavioral mode offered by Zhuangzi, in which a ideal human character is willing to acknowledge the inevitable mode of life, while pursuing the path to Dao. According to Zhuangzi, human has limitations caused by being in human form. However, Zhuangzi doesn’t regard those limitations as something that has to be transcended but as conditions on which True Man can wander freely and easily. Zhuangzi never turns his back from the practical condition of human but he removes the false conditions of the practical conditions, walking toward Dao. Walking a Double Path is a concept that reveals how Zhuangzi connects the practical world to the spiritual world. True Man preserves his body and mind by Walking a Double Path, while opening the possibility of self-transformation to others.
