The Request Strategies with Translation: An Examination of Korean Students’ Pragmatic Awareness

  • 8

The purpose of this study is to investigate Korean students’ pragmatic awareness on request strategies. A total of 59 college students participated in the research. The control groups were given the Discourse Completion Task with four situations. The experimental groups were given the same task after request strategy translation instructions. Findings revealed that students without studying abroad experience were able to use less request strategies while heavily relying on “please”. Students after request strategy translation instructions outperformed in utilizing a variety of request strategies in all four situations. The implication of the study discusses the necessity of explicit translation instruction in English classes to help the students improve their pragmatic awareness.
