TV통역 품질에 대한 사용자 평가: 생방송 동시통역을 중심으로

A Study on User Expectations for TV Interpreting

  • 108

This study aims to shed light on user expectations for TV interpreting based on a survey of 77 TV viewers. The survey included four sample clips of simultaneous interpretation from English into Korean performed by four different interpreters. The samples were excerpted from video materials originally aired live on multiple TV channels to cover a press event following the historic 2018 US-North Korea summit. The survey participants were asked to score the overall interpretation quality of each sample clip on a scale of seven and then to answer a multiple response question about the criteria chosen for their quality assessment, followed by an open-ended question to elicit more details about users’ views on TV interpreting. The result showed that the interpretation clip with a medium speech rate, high fidelity and strong linguistic quality obtained the highest score. In particular, voiced fillers were found to be more detrimental than silent fillers to quality assessment by users. Answers to the multiple response questions indicated that voice quality and stability of performance were top two criteria for users’ assessment of TV interpreting. Comments offered in the open-ended question highlighted users’ expectations for appropriate speech rate, focus on essentials, and technical settings more conducive to the delivery of TV interpreting.
