The presence of agricultural and rural society in South Korea has been threatened due to aging as w ell as depopulation. This study aim s to explore the Japanese support schem e for new farm ers and the role of local group in new farm ers’successful settlem ent in agricultural and rural society. The case study area is Biratori-cho, H okkaido, Japan. Firstly, this study identified the system ic support schem e for new farm ers of Biratori-cho, w hich provides w ith tw o years’ training program , m entoring, rental housing and financial aid. Secondly, w e focused on the birth and the supporting role of local group, w hich is called Neo-frontier . Lastly, w e analysed the relationship of new farm ers and local residents based on the in-depth interview of 11 new farm ers’ household. As conclusions, w e em -phasized the value of quality-based support schem e of local governm ent, unlike the quantity-based policy focused on the num ber of in-m igrants. Also, w e discussed the m eaning of social netw ork in new farm ers’ successful settlem ent in agricultural and rural society.
