대학 교양강좌로서 라틴어 교육 방법론

Latin is an important ancestral language of Western languages and the mother of romance language, but is often said to be a “dead language” because of the absence of the current user. However, Latin was constantly survived even after the Middle Ages in the church and the academic world, and it is still used as an important access tool in various academic fields such as Western literature, history, and philosophy as well as political science and law. Latin is like Chinese characters in the Orient, and it is an academic basic course that must be learned in order to understand Western culture properly. In the age of globalization, Korean universities are also teaching Latin in the liberal arts, and they teach especially classical Latin used in the flourishing period of Roman culture, i.e. from 1st century BC to 1st century AD. This paper is a study on the methodology of Latin education in Korean universities. It first examines the status of Latin in Korea and discusses the importance of methodology in the realities of Latin education which has fallen into a few foreign languages. The main part of paper focuses on three methodologies related to educational contents of Latin. i) As a historical approach to language, it refers to the understanding about the tradition of Indo-european language, the mother language of the romance languages, and the root of the Western languages. ii) As a grammatical approach, I explain the contents of traditional Latin education in phonology, morphology, and syntax. iii) As a cultural approach, I argue the need for a cultural approach in the Latin class of liberal units in non-Western countries and deal with the methodology of using Roman culture and literary content in Latin education. In conclusion, I find that it is desirable for grammar, literature, and cultural content to be harmonized in Latin education, and suggests specific methods. Through this study, I would like to contribute to the establishment of the Latin language education, which is valuable not only as an academic tool but also for a global citizen of the global era, in the university education in Korea.
