Literature Out of The Periodic Table

「주기율표」는 프리모 레비의 다채로운 작품 중에서도 특히 복잡하고 도발적인 텍스트에 속한다. 하지만 글쓰기 과정에서 화학자로서의 레비가 자신의 전문지식을 동원하기 때문에 난해해지는 것은 아니다. 무엇보다 세상의 고정관념에 도전하는 면이 강한 터라, 독자에게도 도전에 상응하는 고착된 관념으로부터의 탈피를 요구한다. 작품에 대한 원만하고도 전체적인 이해는 그같은 요구에 얼마나 비평적으로 부응하는가에 달려있으리라 본다. 본 논문의 목표는 주기율표에 대한 ‘자세한 읽기’를 통해 원소들의 세계를 파악하는 화학자로서의 레비, 화학반응식과 숫자 및 계산의 세계를 초월하는 창작자로서의 레비, 죽음의 생산 공장 아우슈비츠에서 귀환하여 당시의 진실을 드러내는 증언자로서의 레비가 어떻게 총체화되는가를 규명 하는 데 있다. 「주기율표」는 사물에 대한 엄정하고도 정확한 지식을 지향하는 화학자로서의 레비, 인문주의의 본질적 동력인 공감적 상상력을 자유롭게 펼치는 창작자로서의 레비, 그리고 아우슈비츠의 생존자로서 20세기 나치즘과 파시즘의 시대적 어둠을 직시하는 증언자로서의 레비가 일체를 이루는 과정에서 태어난 20세기의 고전인바, 이 글은 그런 평가의 비평적 근거를 텍스트의 엄밀한 읽기로써 탐사 한다.

Primo Levi’s The Periodic Table is a challengingly complicated text in the Levian oeuvre. Thereby critical reading of the text is an especially arduous one that compels readers to unshackle every kind of ideé fixe. This paper, through meticulous scrutiny of the text, aims to reveal that it has essentially interrelated triple-folded textual features: basically, as an ingenious chemist, Levi weaved an unprecedented literary narrative whose successive short-story form is literally borrowed from the periodic table; as a creative writer, Levi wrote a curiously rigorous scientific piece in which a profound analysis of human nature and its society is conducted in the spirit of the humanities; as a conscientious witness of ‘the Auschwitz,’ Levi testified to the enormity of the 20 th century fascism and its psychological aftermath in toto during which the seeds of the writer and chemist in Levi gradually converged. This paper closely explores into the three-layered meaning of The Periodic Table contextualized out of integrative imagination, and argues for the reviving power of its being contemporaneous with the readers’ age.
