Ngugi wa Thiong’o and his Criticism on America for its Neocolonialism, Racism and English Literature

응구기에게 미국은 “아름다운 것, 혹은 추한 것, 혹은 그것들이 섞인 것”의 정체를 가진 국가이지만 이를 문학의 본격적인 소재로 삼지 않는 이유는 케냐의 현실이 여전히 급박한 문제이기 때문이었다. 그는 탈식민의 정치, 사회, 문화, 심리의 영역을 다룬 그의 비평적 글쓰기들에서 뿐만 아니라 기쿠유어를 사용한 문학에서 미국을 오늘날의 제국주의에서 두드러진 “미국의 지도력”을 비판하였다. 미국에 대한 비판에는 인종차별의 문제 즉, 인종주의가 구미와 신식민지에 어떻게 연결되어 있는지를 상세히 다룬 글들도 포함된다. 나아가 미국의 영문학이 영어의 세계화를 주도하고 영국문학과 서구문학을 세계문학의 중심으로 드높이는 역할에 첨병이 되 고 있는 현실을 비판하였다. 요컨대 응구기는 첫째, 소설과 연극 등 그의 작품에서 지적한 미국의 신식민주의적 개입과 주도라는 문제를 비평과 인터뷰 등에서 맹렬히 비판했다. 둘째, 응구기는 제국주의의 중요한 심리적 기제가 바로 인종주의이며 이를 미국의 문제와 연결하여 비판한다. 셋째, 응구기는 세계 문화의 다양성을 말살할 지경에까지 이른 영어와 서구문학을 미국의 영문학이 강화하는 데에 큰 역할을 하고 있다고 비판하며 문화적 다양성을 위한 번역과 문화소통을 강조했다.

To Ngugi wa Thiong’o, the United States is a country with the identity of “the beautiful or the ugly or the mixture,” but it is not a full-fledged material of literature because the reality of Kenya has been still an urgent issue. He criticized the United States for its “leadership of the USA” empowered by today’s imperialism, not only in his critical writings on the political, social, cultural and psychological areas of postcolonialism, but also in literature using Gikuyu. His criticism of the United States also includes details of the issue of racism, which is interwoven to Euro-America and tricontinent. Furthermore, he is worried that the English literature of America is leading the globalization of English making higher the status of Western literature. In short, Ngugi criticized the issue of neocolonial intervention and initiative of the United States, which stood out in his works such as novels, plays, critical essays and interviews. Second, Ngugi has pointed out that racism has been the important psychological mechanism of imperialism and his analyses are stepped further into the neocolonial society. Third, Ngugi criticized the American academies of English and Western literature, which had reached the point of eradicating the diversity of world culture, while playing a major role in strengthening English literature. Instead, he proposes the alternative of translation and cultural communication for cultural diversity.
