The Faust Manifestation in Yi Sang s Poetry

  • 137

Yi Sang s poetry has a unique characteristic. It explored deep meditation about death, the indispensable subject of mankind while dealing with death in depth. In Yi Sang’s poetry, the heavy topic of death was meta-languagized. The specific meaning of Yi Sang’s poetry is characterized by the inability to understand the whole part of the poetry without deciphering it by exercising the power of symbolism and metaphor. This paper aims to select and decipher Faust among the meta-languages that show symbolic power in Yi Sang’s poetry. This paper aims to select and decipher Faust among the meta-languages that exercise symbolic power in Yi Sang’s poetry. Faust in Goethe s novel has become a character who sells his soul to the devil in order to fill his desires or finds and forms his new self in order to overcome the limit. The char-acteristic of this character is to have a double ego. Faust s double ego has two sides of good and evil. The literary parable can be seen as a parable of the sentence itself, but the literary parable in Yi Sang s poetry is to unravel one situation out of the contents of Faust using a specific description. Especially, it describes the situation using space-time movement, which is unique in that the description is based on the theory of relativity. This description of the situation, which has never been expressed in any art genre or literary works, is a setting that is possible only with the perfect understanding of the theory of relativity and acquisition of the Faust legend. There is another Faust type drama, Mirror Man. If there is Mephistopheles in Faust, there is a Mirror man in Mirror Man who came out, breaking the mirror. Thamal, the same character as Faust, commits a triple sin against the past, present and future while going through the world of Eros, the stage of temptation and test, and the absurd and false world. The part where Mirror Man and Yi Sang’s poetry coincide is that Thamal finds a mirror in the temple and fires the pistol at the shape of the self revealed in the mirror. Both Mirror man and Mephistopheles can be seen as the incarnations made of the erotic desire that exists in human beings. In Yi Sang s poetry, there is the objectification of death where emotion is excluded. It is interesting that it delineated the situation of the protagonist depicted in Faust or Mirror Man or to scientifically analyzed unreal phenomenon.
