The Concepts and Tasks concerning Korean Nationalism

지금까지의 민족주의 논의에서는 민족주의 용어가 지나치게 넓고 모호하게 사용되었다. 민족주의가 국가주의, 국민주의 등과 구별되지 않고 사용되며, 애국주의 개념도 또 다른 혼란을 불러온다. 그래서 심지어 때로는 반민족주의적인 현상마저 민족주의로 묘사되는 경우도 있다. 또 민족 정서와 민족주의를 구별하지 않고 모두 민족주의로 서술한다. 그 결과 한국의 민족주의가 매우 강하다는 결론이 도출되는데, 이 논문은 한국인에게 민족 정서를 강하지만 민족주의는 약하다고 주장한다. 한국 민족주의 논의에서는 사대주의에 주목해야 하는 바, 한국인에게 사대주의가 민족주의보다 더 강하다. 한국 민족주의의 과제는 민족주의 본질의 달성과 문제점 완화인데, 앞의 것은 민족 통일과 대외적 자주성의 고취이며, 뒤의 것은 배타성과 폐쇄성 완화이다. 한국 민족주의는 그 목표를 달성해 가면서 문제점을 완화하는 방향으로 정책과 이념을 개발할 필요가 있다.

One of the most evident shortcomings in the studies of Korean nationalism is the overly broad usage of the concept of nationalism itself; the diverse aspects of nationalism some of which are mutually contradictory are not properly discerned and lumped together under the name of nationalism. The underlying problem is the English word nationalism itself which cannot properly distinguish between the nation, state, and citizenship which are all ingredients of nationalism. This article suggests that we properly discern the corresponding Korean terms for these different aspects of nationalism. It also suggests that we distinguish between nationalism, mostly an area of reason and national feelings, an area of passion. Korean nationalism is rather weak compared with strong national feelings of average Koreans. Sadaejui (“serving-the-great”ism), rather than nationalism, is Koreans’ prevalent mental position vis-a-vis outer forces. Sadaejui is directly opposite to nationalism, the essence of which are the movement toward national independence, integration, and self-reliance. Key tasks of Korean nationalism are the achievement of national unification and more independent foreign positions as well as the alleviation of the inherent problems of nationalism itself, i.e. the possibilities of international conflicts, domestic oppression and xenophobia.
