조일수호조규 체결과정에서의 오경석의 막후활동 : 개화당 기원의 재검토

The Behind-the-scenes Activities of Oh Kyung-Seok in the Treaty of Gangwha: Revisiting the Origin of Gaewha-Dang

이 논문의 목적은 조일수호조규(강화도조약) 체결과정에서의 역관 오경석(吳慶錫)의 막후활동을 규명하고, 이를 바탕으로 개화당의 기원과 정치적 목적을 재검토하는 데 있다. 오경석은 1871년 신미양요 당시 흥선대원군에게 대미수교를 권고했다가 실패한 후, 조선의 개국(開國)과 근본적 혁신을 위해 한편으로는 외국의 힘을 불러들여서 조선인들에게 충격을 주고, 다른 한편으로는 비밀리에 양반 자제를 규합해서 정권에 접근하는 방안을 구상했다. 그는 이미 1874년부터 1875년까지 3차례나 북경주재 영국공사관을 비밀리에 방문해서 조선에 군함을 파견해서 무력으로 개국시켜줄 것을 요청했으며, 1876년에는 다시 일본인들과 내통하며 그들에게 유리하게 조일수호조규가 타결되도록 협력하고 조선에 대해 무력을 과시할 것을 조언했다. 훗날 김옥균(金玉均)을 중심으로 갑신정변을 일으키는 비밀결사 개화당은 1871년을 전후하여 오경석과 유대치(劉大致)의 공모로 결성되었는바, 이를 전후한 오경석의 비밀스러운 행적은 개화당의 기원을 이해하는 데 중요한 의미를 갖는다.

The purpose of this article is to unveil the behind-the-scenes activities of the official interpreter Oh Kyung-Suk(吳慶錫) in the treaty of Gangwha(1876) and to revisit the origin and political aims of so-called Gaewha-Dang(開化黨). As the United States fleet approached to Choson in 1871(辛未洋擾), Oh Kyung-suk insisted on the making of the treaty. But rejected by Taewon-gun(大院君) who seized power at that time, pursuing the opening and the thorough reformation of the nation, he contrived the plan of inviting foreign forces to shock Chosun people on the one hand, and gathering secretly young nobles to access to power on the other hand. From 1874 to 1875, he had already been to the British legation in Beijing secretly three times and asked for sending fleet to open Chosun coercively. And in 1876, he again colluded with the Japanese to make the treaty of Gangwha in their favor and advised them to display power. As the secret society Gaewha-Dang which would mount the Gapsin Coup of 1884 was formed under the guidance of Oh Kyung-Suk and his close friend Yu Dae-Chin(劉大致) in 1871, the secret activities of Oh has significant implications for understanding the origin of Gaewha-Dang.
